You cannot screenshot your way to AI visibility

AI answers vary across prompts, sessions and weeks. Why one-off checks mislead, and how repeated prompt-panel measurement gives you a real signal.

By Wen Goh · Head of Search & Visibility

A founder recently showed us a screenshot of ChatGPT recommending his company, shared in the company Slack with celebration emojis. Two weeks later, the same question produced an answer naming three competitors — and not him.

Neither screenshot was wrong. Both were meaningless in isolation.

AI answers are distributions, not rankings

Traditional SEO trained us to think in fixed positions: you rank #3 for a keyword, and tomorrow you will probably rank #3 again. Generative systems do not work that way. The same question asked five times can yield five different brand sets, influenced by phrasing, session context, model version and retrieval variance.

That means AI visibility is a probability, not a position. The question is not "does ChatGPT recommend us?" but "in what percentage of relevant prompts do we appear, and is that share rising?"

How structured measurement works

Our AI Visibility Dashboard runs the same discipline every month:

  1. A fixed prompt panel — 20 to 50 questions real buyers ask, covering category, comparison and local intent.
  2. Multiple platforms — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI experiences, because their retrieval differs meaningfully.
  3. Repeated runs — each prompt asked multiple times to smooth variance.
  4. Trend reporting — citation share, sentiment and competitor overlap, tracked as a time series.

What the trend tells you that a snapshot cannot

  • A rising share validates that entity and content work is landing.
  • A falling share flags problems early — stale facts, a competitor's content push, a model update.
  • Platform gaps show where to focus: cited by Perplexity but absent from Gemini usually points to source-coverage differences you can fix.

The brands winning the AI search era treat visibility like revenue: a metric you review monthly with a system behind it. The ones losing treat it like weather.
