The AI Visibility Playbook: getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini

A step-by-step system for making AI answer engines understand, trust and recommend your brand — from entity foundations to recurring measurement.

By Wen Goh · Head of Search & Visibility

Key takeaways

  • AI visibility is engineered through entity clarity and consistency, not keyword density.
  • Measure citation share on a recurring prompt panel — a single check is noise.
  • The same content foundation feeds SEO, AEO and GEO; you build it once.

Your buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini before they ask you. Getting recommended in those answers is not luck — it is a system. Here is the one we run.

Step 1 — Fix your entity before your content

An AI system cannot recommend a brand it cannot confidently identify. Before writing a single article, make your brand unambiguous:

  • Consistent brand facts everywhere — name, category, location, founding, services — identical across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
  • Organization schema with sameAs links tying your profiles together.
  • A clear "about" and "what we do" in plain language a model can lift verbatim.

Inconsistency is the silent killer: if three sources describe you three ways, the model trusts none of them.

Step 2 — Publish answer-shaped content

Answer engines quote content that is already shaped like an answer:

  • Lead each key page with a concise, quotable definition of the topic.
  • Add well-formed FAQs with direct, self-contained answers.
  • Use structured data (FAQPage, Article, Product) so the meaning is explicit.
  • Demonstrate E-E-A-T — real authorship, sources, and first-hand experience.

Write the one-sentence answer first, then support it. That sentence is what gets cited.

Step 3 — Build topical authority in clusters

Depth beats breadth. Pick the two or three topics you must own and build connected clusters — a pillar page plus supporting articles that interlink. Authority on a topic is what makes a model reach for you specifically rather than a generic competitor.

Step 4 — Measure citation share, repeatedly

This is where most brands fail. AI answers vary by prompt, session and week, so a one-off screenshot proves nothing.

  • Define a prompt panel — the real questions your buyers ask, in their words.
  • Run it on a schedule across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI.
  • Track citation share (how often you appear) and who is cited instead.
  • Feed the gaps back into steps 1–3.

Trends, not snapshots, tell you whether the work is compounding.

What to expect

GEO compounds slowly then noticeably. Entity and technical fixes land first; citation share moves over weeks as content and authority build. No credible partner guarantees a citation — but a disciplined loop of fix, publish, measure, reinvest reliably moves the line.

The brands winning AI search are not the loudest. They are the clearest, most consistent and most measured.
