Social SEO: your buyers search inside the feed now

People don't just scroll social — they search it. Treating TikTok, Instagram and Xiaohongshu as feeds instead of search engines leaves your best content undiscoverable.

A quiet shift has changed how social content earns its keep: people now search inside social platforms. They type "best facial in Orchard" into TikTok and Xiaohongshu the way they used to type it into Google. If your content isn't built to be found on demand, it disappears the moment the algorithmic feed moves on.

The feed is temporary. Search is forever.

A viral post spikes and evaporates. A post that ranks for a search term keeps getting discovered for months, by people actively looking for exactly what you offer. The second kind compounds; the first resets to zero. Most brands optimize entirely for the first.

What Social SEO actually means

Treating each platform as a search engine with its own ranking signals, and shaping content accordingly:

  • Keyword-aware captions and on-screen text — say the words people search, not just clever ones.
  • Descriptive, searchable titles rather than vague hooks.
  • Hashtags and metadata as index terms, not decoration.
  • Content mapped to real queries — "how much", "is it worth it", "best for X" — the questions buyers actually type.

Xiaohongshu is the clearest case

On Xiaohongshu, search is the whole game: Chinese-speaking consumers research a category there before they buy, and keyword-seeded notes surface for months. But the same behaviour is now everywhere — TikTok and Instagram both push in-app search hard, and both reward content built to be found.

The shift in mindset

Stop asking "what will go viral this week?" and start asking "what will someone find when they search my category next month?" Attention that can't be found on demand is attention you rent. Searchable content is attention you own.
