Does SEO still matter in the age of AI search?
With ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews answering questions directly, is SEO dead? No — but its job changed. Here's what still works and what to stop doing.
Short answer: SEO is not dead — it's the foundation AI search is built on. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews don't invent answers from nothing; they assemble them from content that ranks well and is clearly structured. If you're invisible to search, you're invisible to the AI too. What's changed isn't whether SEO matters — it's what winning looks like.
Why "SEO is dead" keeps getting said
The fear is real on the surface: if AI answers the question in the results, why would anyone click? For some informational queries, click-through genuinely drops. (We covered that shift here: AI Overviews are eating the click.)
But "fewer clicks on some queries" is not "SEO is dead." It's "the goal moved."
What SEO's job is now
The job expanded from ranking to being the trusted source:
- Be in the pool AI draws from. AI systems pull from top-ranking, crawlable, well-structured pages. Classic SEO — technical health, content, authority — is how you get into that pool. No SEO, no citation.
- Win the citation, not just the click. If Google's summary is built from your content and names you, you got the trust signal even without the click — and you still get the click on high-intent queries where people dig in.
- Own commercial-intent queries. Nobody asks ChatGPT to "buy" — transactional and local searches still go to Google and still convert. Those pages matter as much as ever.
What still works (and matters more)
- Technical foundations — crawlability, speed, structure. AI can't cite what it can't parse. (Technical SEO foundations.)
- Topical authority — deep clusters, not one-off posts. AI trusts sources that own a topic.
- Answer-shaped content — direct answers, clear structure, sourced facts. (How to show up in AI Overviews.)
- Entity clarity and schema — telling search and AI exactly who you are. (Why schema matters for AI.)
- Local SEO — "near me" and map-pack searches are untouched by AI answers. (Local SEO for Singapore businesses.)
What to stop doing
- Chasing raw traffic on thin informational terms that AI now answers directly.
- Publishing volume over depth — one authoritative page beats ten shallow ones.
- Keyword stuffing — AI evaluates meaning, not density.
The reframe
Think of it as three layers of one system: SEO gets you found and ranked, AEO makes you quotable, GEO makes AI recommend you. They're not competitors — they stack. We wrote the full version here: SEO, AEO and GEO are one system, and compared them side by side here.
So no — don't cut SEO. Redirect it: from chasing clicks to becoming the source both Google and AI trust. That's exactly what Search & AI Visibility is built to do. Want to see where you stand? Get an AI Growth Audit.
