Why your social media gets likes but no leads

Likes aren't pipeline. If your social gets engagement but no enquiries, you're missing a conversion path. Here's how to fix CTAs, DMs, link-in-bio and measurement.

If your social media gets likes but no leads, the problem almost always isn't your content — it's that there's no path from the like to the enquiry. Engagement and pipeline are different things, and a post can be genuinely good while sending you exactly zero business, because nobody built the road from "I enjoyed that" to "I want to talk to you."

This is the most common and most fixable social media failure. The content is working. The conversion path is missing.

Likes are a vanity metric until proven otherwise

A like costs the viewer nothing and commits them to nothing. It feels like progress, which is precisely why it's dangerous — it lets a brand feel successful while the sales team stays quiet. Followers, likes, and views are only worth anything if some fraction of them eventually become enquiries. On their own, they're a scoreboard for a game that doesn't pay.

The metric that matters is the one almost nobody tracks: follower-to-enquiry. How many of the people engaging with you actually reach out? If you can't answer that, you're flying blind on the only number that feeds revenue.

The missing conversion path, part by part

A conversion path is the deliberate route from content to contact. Most brands are missing three or four of these pieces:

  • A clear call to action. Most posts end without asking for anything. Tell the viewer the next step — comment a keyword, DM you, click the link, book a call. Not on every post, but far more often than "never."
  • DM as a front door. On TikTok and Instagram especially, the DM is where interest converts. Invite it deliberately ("DM me 'audit' and I'll send it") and make sure someone — or a well-set-up automation — actually responds fast.
  • A working link-in-bio. This is your only clickable real estate on most feeds, and it's usually wasted. Point it at one relevant destination that matches your recent content, not a generic homepage.
  • A destination that continues the conversation. The click should land somewhere that answers the next question and makes enquiring easy — not a dead end.

Each piece is small. Together they're the difference between an audience and a pipeline.

Content still has to earn the click

A conversion path can't rescue content with nothing behind it. The reason someone follows the CTA is that your content has already built trust — which is why the content pillars that carry buyers from problem-aware to ready-to-act matter so much. When your feed answers real questions and gets found in search inside the feed, the CTA is a natural next step rather than a cold ask.

So the fix is two-sided: content that builds searchable trust, and a path that captures the interest that trust creates. Miss either and you get likes without leads — or leads-shaped effort with no audience to convert.

Measure enquiries, not applause

The final shift is what you count. Stop reporting reach and likes as if they were results. Track the funnel:

  • Reach and engagement — early signals only, useful for direction.
  • Profile visits and link clicks — intent starting to show.
  • DMs and enquiries — the number that actually matters.

When you measure by enquiries, everything upstream gets more honest. You stop chasing viral reach for its own sake, you concentrate on the two or three platforms where buyers actually research, and you repurpose ideas toward conversion rather than applause.
