Search vs Shopping vs Performance Max vs Demand Gen: which Google campaign fits you

Google gives you several campaign types and they are not interchangeable. A plain-language guide to what each one is for — so you stop paying for the wrong structure.

Choosing the wrong Google campaign type is one of the quietest ways to waste budget. The short version: Search captures existing intent, Shopping sells products, Performance Max scales broad demand, and Demand Gen creates it. Match the type to your goal and the account gets simpler and cheaper. Here's how to tell them apart.

Search — capture intent that already exists

Text ads on Google results, triggered by keywords. Someone types "emergency plumber Bugis" and you appear. This is the highest-intent, most controllable campaign type.

  • Best for: lead gen, services, high-consideration purchases, and anyone with clear keyword demand.
  • Why it wins: you're meeting people at the moment they're actively looking. Control is high; you choose the keywords, see the search terms, and defend the highest-value queries.

Shopping — put products in front of buyers

Product listings with image, price and title, pulled from a Merchant Center feed. Ideal when someone is comparing specific products.

  • Best for: e-commerce and retailers with a product catalogue.
  • Why it wins: shows the product, price and shop before the click — so the click is more qualified.

Performance Max — scale broad demand with automation

One AI-driven campaign across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Powerful, but needs clean data and guardrails or it drifts.

  • Best for: e-commerce with a good feed, and mature accounts scaling beyond exact keywords.
  • Watch out: without exclusions and qualified-lead tracking, it buys cheap, low-value conversions. Full breakdown: Performance Max, explained (and when not to use it).

Demand Gen — create demand you don't have yet

Visual, social-style ads across YouTube, Shorts, Discover and Gmail. This is closer to paid social: you're generating interest, not capturing a search.

  • Best for: brand awareness, new product launches, and filling the top of the funnel.
  • Why it's different: nobody searched for you — you're introducing yourself, so expect longer paths to conversion.

How to choose

A simple way to think about it:

  • You have keyword demand and want leads → Search first.
  • You sell products online → Shopping (and often Performance Max) with a clean feed.
  • You want to scale proven demand with automation → Performance Max, with guardrails.
  • Nobody's searching yet and you need awareness → Demand Gen.

Most real accounts run two or three of these together — for example Search for high-intent capture plus Performance Max or Shopping for scale. The mistake is forcing everything through one type, or defaulting to the most automated one because it's the least work.
