Why your Google Ads clicks don't become customers

Rising spend, plenty of clicks, few real customers. Usually the problem isn't the ads — it's what happens after the click, and what Google is being told to optimise for.

If your Google Ads generate clicks but few customers, the ads are rarely the real problem. The leak is almost always in one of three places: what happens after the click, what you're telling Google to optimise for, and how fast you respond. Fix those and the same spend produces more customers.

1. Google is optimising for the wrong thing

Google's automated bidding does exactly what you tell it. If you count every form submission as a "conversion", it optimises for cheap form fills — including spam, tyre-kickers and mis-clicks. You get more "conversions" and fewer actual customers.

The fix is to feed Google qualified signals, not raw ones:

  • Track leads that become genuine enquiries, not just form loads.
  • Use offline conversion import: send closed or qualified deals back from your CRM so Google learns what a real customer looks like and bids toward more of them.

This one change often shifts performance more than any headline test. We wrote about the mindset here: stop optimising for form fills.

2. The landing page loses what the ad won

A click that arrives on a slow, generic, or off-message page bounces. Common culprits:

  • Sending traffic to the homepage instead of a page matched to the ad's promise.
  • Slow load on mobile (every second costs conversions).
  • Forms that ask for too much, too soon.

More budget can't fix this — only a better page can. This is where ads and conversion rate optimisation meet.

3. You reply too slowly

Even a perfect click and a great landing page fail if the enquiry then sits for hours. In most markets the business that responds first wins the deal — and leads decay fast. If your ads generate enquiries at 9pm and you reply at 10am, you've paid for a lead a competitor closed overnight.

We've measured this repeatedly: speed-to-lead is the cheapest conversion lever most advertisers ignore.

The pattern

Clicks are the middle of the story, not the end. The full chain is:

right query → right landing page → right conversion signal → fast response → customer.

A break anywhere in that chain shows up as "our Google Ads don't work". Usually the ads are fine; the chain around them is broken.
